The Daniel Center held their 3rd Annual Pig Roast on the afternoon of June 12 at the American Legion Arlington Post 1302 in Poughkeepsie. The overcast sky and threatening rain did not keep attendees away who came to this fund raiser to support our veterans. The Daniel Center Executive Director Julia Dehn welcomed the attendees and thanked them for supporting this veteran’s project. She briefly described that they are still looking for an affordable house. In the meanwhile, they are seeking the donation of office space so they can begin providing some support services for the veterans. They have been working for four years with fund drives, asking for donations, and writing grants to purchase the home and eventually to outfit it with furniture and other household and office items. Julia thanked her staffs who were visible all during the roast collecting for the raffles, answering questions, and helping in the set up and in the clean up. Not to be forgotten were the staffs who were cutting the pork and serving the hungry attendees. Without the help of the Wagon Wheels Deli Caterer from Highland (845-691-6975) in preparing and cooking the pork and some of the dishes, it would have been impossible to have all the food available at one time. Thanks are given to the American Legion Arlington Post 1302 for the use of the facility and to the DJ DaVishous Brothers for the music and PA system.
There were plenty of pork and pulled pork for all to eat, even if you came for seconds. There were many entree selections in addition to the pork and included mac and cheese, baked beans, ziti, sausage and peppers, cole slaw, potato and macaroni salads, hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages, and cupcakes for dessert. They had a 50/50 raffle, raffle for two specialty baskets, and awarded several door prizes. DJ music was provided by Visham and Vishwa DaVishous Brothers (845-559-7785, DaVishousBros@gmail.com) and Michelle Barone (singer, songwriter, and performer, can be contacted at 845-656-6003 or on web page www.michelleboronesmusic.com) sang a cappella the National Anthem for this veteran’s occasion and it was spectacularly sung. Bonnie Erlenmeyer as an independent distributor for Premier Designs high fashion jewelry had a sales table and can be reached at 845-473-4367 or at bonnieerlenmeyer@yahoo.com. Next year’s pig roast is planned for the second Sunday in June at this location.
The funds being raised are to support the purchase of a home to be used by veterans in need of help. Their Mission Statement is The Daniel Center will be a home where veterans can come to live with other veterans, share experiences, give each other encouragement and support for transition back into society. Their hope is to purchase or get a donated home in the Hudson Valley (within 20 miles of the Mid-Hudson Bridge, in Dutchess or Ulster County) that has the most to offer their clients by providing the right mix of a supportive environment along with access to professionals and ample opportunities for employment and education. The Daniel Center will be a new model veteran’s service agency dedicated to alleviating reintegration problems facing veterans by establishing and environment where they can consult, create, and self initiate a personalized program tailored to their specific needs. Any additional tax deductible donations will be appreciated to help in the purchase of the home.
